Soundtrack That Plays in our Mind

Someone once said that we all have a musical soundtrack that plays in our mind. Where did this come from? My guess is years of programming from everything from commercials to music. Everything we have ever seen or heard is in our brain somewhere. Have you ever wondered why a song is in your head and you cannot seem to get rid of it?
My research and questions to people have found that it may pertain to our emotional and psychological state at the time. I wake up and hear a song that may be a “trigger” or an “anchor” to something from my past. Sometimes it is about a girl, other times it will take me to places I do not wish to go.

Remembering things and forgetting them constitute two ways that our subconscious protects us. For some reason Veterans like us find ourselves vividly remembering incidents, people, places, and things that may have warped our thinking and judgment. Sometimes this will manifest itself negative ways, we may become isolated, have panic attacks or bouts of confusion. The practice that works for me is replacing those old songs with something new and different until I can handle them. Sometimes it takes leverage (pain) to take action on these situations. If we are in enough pain, we will respond with whatever action is needed for change to take place.

Create new memories with these songs or replace the words with something that makes you feel good. My neighbor burns his trash on his farm, I can smell it a mile away, and it takes me back to Somalia just about every time. Alternatively, another personal favorite of mine is when he shoots one of his cows in the head when he sells one. Just the gunshot makes my mind move into fight or flight mode. The other day I opened my truck door to let my dog out when we went to the park. Just the way the handle “popped” put a ringing in my ears and I was instantly back to a place I did not want to be. By practice, taking action and using trial and error I have learned to change my state in a split second and move to a more comfortable place.

I have become a firm believer in “garbage in, garbage out.” I replace those songs (old ways of thinking) with other motivational material or with new songs (new ways of thinking) and I create a peaceful fun environment for my subconscious. Remember that our subconscious cannot distinguish between reality and fiction. It will only do what our conscious mind tells it to do.

If we say, “I can’t” the conscious mind tells the subconscious “okay boys; he says he can’t do it so let’s prove him right.” If we say, “I can” the conscious mind says “okay boys he says he can so let’s make it happen.”

PTSD and Meditation

Today, there are a lot of things that help in keeping us
entertained. In the internet alone, there are a multitude
of websites that do such that like video sharing sites,
gaming sites and other websites which cater to our
interests. This, at times, can be a detour to our healing.

While there is nothing wrong with entertaining ourselves, a
problem arises with our constant need for distractions.
Because of that, it becomes difficult for us to focus on
one thing.

We do not need to take extreme measures to help us focus.
There are practices which can do the job for us. It
includes the practice of meditation.

People take up meditation for different purposes and
improving concentration is one of them. There are several
methods by which meditation does its job.

One is through breathing exercises. Even an exercise that
is as simple as being aware of the times we inhale and
exhale can do wonders to our ability to concentrate.

While it may sound easy, it can be quite difficult
especially if one has to deal with distractions such as
outside noise.

At times my mind is like Grand Central Station.  Buddhist call this
“Monkey Mind”

Another method is by reciting a mantra. A mantra is a
phrase or a sound that is recited repeatedly. For
Catholics, praying the rosary is a form of a mantra.

The repetition becomes the center of the meditation to
which the person’s attention becomes focused.

There are other more methods by which meditation can help
improve concentration. However, the two mentioned above are
the most basic and could help beginners start out with the

2. Write a list of 5 affirmations that you want to repeat regularly

These affirmations should be related to the goal you want to achieve. For example, if you want to do better in study, you could say “I study well”, “I am organized”, “I do well in my exams”. These will help to build your confidence and change your thinking if you are struggling on these things.

3. Repeat the affirmations you have, every single dayDo this for 1-2 minutes at most. This is all that is required. Repeat it as if it is true and in a confident way with passion. This allows the messages to penetrate more easily in the unconscious mind.

The affirmations are only changing the beliefs, but physical action allows you to take advantage of those beliefs in the best way possible. The Brain

The left side of your brain controls the right side of your body. This is your conscious functions like logical thinking and verbalizing (words).

The right side of your brain controls the left side of your body. This is your intuitive thoughts and subconscious (images).

When I was a young soldier, I had no confidence. I was pitiful, awkward, and emotionally a mess. If it wasn’t for the Drill Sergeant and other soldiers I was training with I would have never made it through Basic Training or my Advanced Training.

They would tell me “you can do it”, “you can make the shot”. After awhile I was telling myself “you can do it, you did it once before, you can do it again”. (Success breeds success).

Eventually it all became second nature to me (perfect practice makes perfect) and when it counted and lives were at stake it happened out of pure instinct from all of the training. Of course it is a bit different when others are shooting at you. But I was so conditioned to execute what I had learned that it came naturally. I basically relived the past successes. “you can do it” you can make the shot”.

Great musicians have said they heard the music in their heads and then and only then did they write it down. When we are awake we are mostly under the control of our left brain. Those flashes of inspiration come from our right brain.

Okay now why is this of any importance of all you may ask? The answer: the images you see and the words you say to yourself have more power than you could ever imagine.

We talk to ourselves everyday not even aware of what we are saying to empower or sabotage our lives.

A good rule: avoid self defeating images and languages.

It took many years to find out what was between my ears and how to use it to help my fellow man. I learned that I had an incredibly high IQ (which is worthless if you don’t use it,) remember Knowledge isn’t power. Knowledge with massive action is power.

I owe many of my blessings in my life to A couple old Vietnam Drill Sergeants that pushed me to understood what I had to face someday. We never talked about the nightmares and demons that one would deal with. That was something back then that you just did not do. You sucked it up (usually from a bottle of booze).
