You often hear the saying “You are what you eat” and this is true. Since I’ve changed my diet, I’m now a chicken salad, rather than a burger with fries.

It is also true that you are what you think.

If you consider yourself an “ordinary person”, guess what? That’s what you’ll be – ordinary. If you’re happy with this, then fine – carry on. If you want more, then you have to think more.

How you consider yourself is vital – here’s why…

If you wanted to be a good musician, then this doesn’t happen over night. It takes years of dedicated practice. Could you spend an hour or two a day practising if you didn’t think of yourself as a musician? It’s unlikely. You need to FEEL like a musician and believe you’re one in order to practice like one.

Think that you’re a great musician NOW, and you will feverishly work to make it happen. Your mind won’t feel right when you play badly. You will expect to be better, and will work to reach this ‘equilibrium’.

Loss aversion

Our minds are more motivated to avoid loss that they are to seek gain. Marketers have known this for years. They know that a person is more likely to take action to avoid a loss in their lives – and they play on this.

Insurance companies scare people into taking action to avoid a loss, and they make billions doing so.

People fear their houses burning down, and spend hard earned cash insuring against this. They may not be taking as much action to improve their house. They are acting to keep what they’ve got. If they used the money they were spending on insurance, they could improve their house instead.

Negative thinking can make you focus on avoiding a loss, rather than reaching out for a gain. Luckily you an do something to combat this.

Visualise your success as if it is happening NOW.

Close your eyes and see your success as real as you can. Use all your senses. See yourself enjoying the lifestyle of your chosen success. Enjoy the feeling.

If you can visualise, you have a chance of getting there. Your mind will believe you have already attained this success – it believes what you imagine has really happened.

This will cause you to EXPECT success. You will no longer consider it a bonus – it will be essential. You won’t rest until you have it. You have tasted it in your imagination, and you won’t want to let it go.

If you want a luxury villa by the beach, then visualising it will help. See all the rooms, smell the salty sea air, feel the hot sun and the cool breeze caressing your skin. When you come home to your dusty apartment on the busy roadside, your mind will say “This isn’t right, where’s my beach house?!”

This sense of “loss” can motivate you to take action and work towards your birth right of a luxury beach villa. It won’t happen by magic, but it will help motivate you to make it happen.

I notice this with car owners. People who have a car and something happens to it will usually move heaven and earth to get another one. They find a way to acquire another car in quick time. If they’d never experienced life with one, they wouldn’t be so motivated.

thoughts so they aren’t dominating your focus any more. Simply sit
back and allow your thoughts to flow effortlessly by, while you
keep your focus on nothing. Slowly inhale and exhale, inhale and
exhale – and you’ll feel stress and inner conflict begin to melt
away almost immediately. If you do notice that you have latched
onto a thought and you’ve begun thinking again (you probably will
do this several times, just out of habit), let go and gently return
your focus to nothing. It does take practice to master, but you’ll
be amazed by the peacefulness this technique can inspire.
Create a peaceful haven in your mind.
Another great technique is to create a soothing, imaginary haven in
your mind. This can be a real place you have visited before, such
as a beautiful botanical garden, an ocean beach or lake front, or a
place that exists only in your own mind. This mental haven does
not have to conform to the usual laws of physical reality, either.
Your haven can be a serene oasis nestled between an ocean, a
forest, botanical gardens – and even an amusement park! You can
make it as fun, beautiful and whimsical as you like.
Spend some time “creating” this mental haven and put as much detail
as you can into it. What does it smell like? Are there beautiful
flowers that give off a pleasant fragrance? Can you hear birds
singing? Is the breeze warm or cool on your face? Keep going
until you’ve made it seem as real and rich as possible, and then
begin spending a few minutes there each day. You want to become
very familiar with the sights, sounds, scents and essence of this
place, and spend enough time there that you automatically relax the
moment you call up the mental image.
Then, whenever you find yourself stressed or in need of a little
nurturing simply close your eyes and mentally flee to your peaceful
haven for a few minutes!
